Oct 6, By midth century, many Cherokee men and women realized that their survival depended on adopting a twisted, primitive, patriarchal way of life that Europeans forced on them. In February of , the great Cherokee leader Attakullakulla came to South Carolina to negotiate trade agreements with the governor and was shocked to find that no white women were present. Europeans were astonished to see that Cherokee women were the equals of men—politically, economically and theologically. One of the hardest things for the colonists to comprehend was the Cherokee kinship system. It was based on the matrilineal structure —the oldest social organization known to man woman? In fact, the father was not formally related to his offspring.

Extreme Weather Leads to Deaths
Those who strenuously advocate the removal of the Cherokees to the west of the Mississippi, Col. M'Kenney and other agents of the Government in particular, have often repeated the unfounded assertion, as our readers very well know, that the full Cherokees are desirous of emigrating, but are kept back by the influence of the Chiefs, half-breeds and white men, whose interest it is to keep them where they are. M'Kenney in his last report told the public that the government had sent off upwards of Cherokees -this is a fine come-off indeed. Six hundred Cherokees! We know this to be intended as a blind-we knew there were some whites, some blacks, and many half-breeds, and so informed the public. But as an Indian cannot be a competent witness, we have probably not been believed. We now bring in a white man to testify. The Steamboat Industry, Capt. Johnson arrived at this place, about noon, on Wednesday last having on board about cabin and deck passengers principally emigrants to the Territory, and about emigrating Cherokee Indians from the old nation who are on their way to the Cherokee country up the Arkansas. A few of these Cherokees have a little of the appearance of the Indian, but the principal part of them show no signs of retaining in their veins any portion of the aboriginal blood.
Great White Bear
In the early s, the sovereign Cherokee nation covered a vast region that included northwest Georgia and adjacent land in Tennessee , North Carolina and Alabama. Under the terms of an treaty, the United States guaranteed that Cherokee land would be off-limits to white settlers forever. The Indian Removal Act signed by President Andrew Jackson in authorized the federal government to relocate tribes within state borders to unsettled land west of the Mississippi River. When white settlers encroached on Cherokee land to grow cotton and search for newly discovered gold, the United States ordered the Cherokee to join the Creek, Seminole, Choctaw and Chicksaw tribes in resettling to present-day Oklahoma. The first Cherokees to relocate—approximately 2, men, women and children split into four groups—did so voluntarily in and early They traveled westward by boat following the winding paths of the Tennessee, Ohio, Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers. The journey for these voluntary exiles was as short as 25 days, and deaths numbered less than two dozen.
Myths and legends tell tales filled with symbols and images that have helped man explain and understand more about the natural world we live in, as well as the supernatural world that lies just beyond our comprehension. The innate desire to search beyond the natural has challenged many a soul, drawing them into uncharted territory on an enchanted quest to peer into the other side. As we begin to see beyond the veil, we enter through intangible doors braving our way to a greater enlightenment with the divine spirit. Choosing the correct doorway can be quite a challenge. Some have discovered exciting and illuminating new frontiers within their journey, while others find themselves more lost than found. For those walking the higher path, the doorways have led them to a greater understanding of an abstract world that strangely parallels natural reality, showing them that there are stranger things in heaven than on earth. There are many methods used to reach a supernatural reality beyond what can be mentioned in this opening statement.
